Ayuo is a wonderfully sensitive performer of pastoral psych-folk that touches on both Japanese and Anglo-Scots traditions--he's even covered Robin Williamson songs in the past. He writes hugely epic world music synthesis that seem to have a lot in common with the direction the Boredoms have been heading in the last couple of years (i.e., an emphasis on the drone and a diverse array of multi-layered instruments like sitar-guitars and soft
synths). He was born in Japan in the early-'60s but spent a formative decade in New York City (English is actually his first language, not Japanese) where he lived with his mother and an Iranian-American stepfather who exposed him to a great deal of Persian music as a child. He returned to live in Japan as a teenager and joined an early incarnation of Keiji Haino's Fushitsusha in 1979. Since then, he has released nearly a dozen albums and performed or collaborated with a staggeringly diverse group of individuals,including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Peter Hammill, Danny Thompson, the Fairport Convention, and Steeleye Span.

ベルリン、ストックホルム、ニューヨークで育ち、なかでもニューヨークのグリニビレッジで過ごした成長期に、60年代後半のアメリカ文化から強い影響を受ける。8才よりクラシック・ギターを習い始め、スタンリー=シルバーマン、後にウィリアム=ヘルマンに師事。
ギターの他にも様々な楽器を演奏し、古代音楽にみられる世界の繋がりを＜ネオ・トラッド＞という独自のサウンドで表現し、国際的に活躍している。
自身の楽曲制作活動の他、舞踊・ドキュメント映画・ＣＭ音楽など様々な分野に楽曲を提供。英語作詞にも力を入れており、様々なミュージシャンに提供している。
2000年には、MIDIレコードよりアルバム『アース・ギター』が発売され、「サイレント・フィルム」も再編集でＣＤ化し、同時発売された。独自の音楽観を持つ存在として執筆の依頼も多い。近年では、音楽を軸とした新しい表現方法を提唱し、音楽家に限らず、ファッション・デザイナー、建築家、グラフィックデザイナー、舞踊家、等、様々や分野、世代のアーティスト達と共に表現の場のプロデュースも手掛けている。
2004年1月に太田裕美とのジョイント・アルバム『ＲＥＤ ＭＯＯＮ』をニューヨークのＴＺＡＤＩＫレーベルより発売。2005年には源氏物語の「葵の上」に基づく、洋楽器と邦楽器をまぜたオペラ作品『ＡＯＩ』をＴＺＡＤＩＫレーベルより発売。2006年１０月にはＣＤ『絵の中の姿』を発売。現在までに１6枚のソロ・アルバムを発表している
